What have you learned about yourself mentoring with Junto?

I always wondered if maybe I wasn’t the right fit inside of a large corporation. After experiencing the entrepreneurial spirit and the nurturing environment that exists within Junto, I’m convinced that it’s indeed true.

What is your most memorable Junto moment?

I had the good fortune to be involved with Spikeball from early on, and to see them grow, develop, and flourish has been really memorable.

What is your superpower?

Pattern recognition. One thing I try to do is look at complex situations from multiple perspectives, discern strategies, and provide an “out of body experience” for others based on that.

Finish the following sentence: "In my experience, ______________."

The laws of gravity really do prevail. When people say “there’s a different business model out there”, or “cashflow doesn’t matter”...well, it really does, those things matter no matter what business you’re in. And secondly, you can’t ever have enough good people around you.

How would you describe your areas of expertise based on industry, market, and/or function?

In different industries, I’ve served as President, CEO, or a general manager. More recently, in mergers and acquisitions, I’ve become involved in talking to potential vendors and investors, and it’s a very different experience.

What are 1-2 leadership virtues you've observed or learned in your career?

As a leader of a company, get to know your customers - their aspirations, their pain points - get to know who they are as people. After that, it’s internal. Make sure different groups in the company are talking to each other, as opposed to a top-down communication line.

What is one book, blog, or podcast you recommend widely?

Good to Great by James Collins, and TopGrading by Bradford D. Smart.
