"You’re never too old or too experienced to learn or to listen. Watching the companies I mentored absorb our shared experiences and take it all in gave me a newfound appreciation to do the same thing."
What have you learned about yourself mentoring with Junto?
You’re never too old or too experienced to learn or to listen. Watching the companies I mentored absorb our shared experiences and take it all in gave me a newfound appreciation to do the same thing.
Finish the following sentence: "In my experience, ______________."
Any early vision of what you think your business will be will most certainly not be the case one or two years out.
What is one book, blog, or podcast you recommend widely?
One of my favorite books is Rework by Jason Fried. It’s a great summary and analysis of the agile environment of mobile and digital companies. I’d also suggest following him on Twitter, he always is sharing things worth reading.
What is something that's not on your LinkedIn profile that you wish was?
A personal hobby - I collect maps. Everywhere I’ve gone since I was a kid, I’ve gotten a map. I have thousands now - I even have 15 or 20 investment-grade maps from the 16th and 17th centuries.
What are 1-2 leadership virtues you've observed or learned in your career?
First, be quiet. Just listen - hold back commentary until you really understand your employee, your colleague, your partner, or whoever you’re talking to. Second, the best leaders are the ones that practice what they preach. Good leaders are not just a strategic visionary but in the trenches, rolling their sleeves up, and doing the work.
How would you describe your areas of expertise based on industry, market, and/or function?
My background has been mostly in media and, specifically the last decade, in digital media, marketing, and ad tech. I’ve been a CEO, C-level partner, leader, and visionary with specialties in fundraising and product development.
What are you working on right now?
I’m 18 months into a startup called Squarestack, it’s a platform and business apps command center for the small business owner. It aggregates all of their software solutions in one place and has a consolidated dashboard to review all the real time metrics of their business.
What is your most memorable Junto moment?
After mentoring a company during the program, they asked me to join their advisory board. It was an honor and it was humbling.
What is your superpower?
My creative vision. I can see trends a little further out than most within my industry.
What is your strength when it comes to emotional intelligence?
Empathy. As a seasoned executive who has managed many employees, been managed by all sorts of personalities, and working with investors, I understand many pains and successes. It is one of my key strengths when it comes to building a company and building my teams.
