I was inspired to write this post after reading an article yesterday by Gallup called "The No. 1 Employee Benefit That No One's Talking About."

The reason I was inspired by the article is because it reminded me of the main reason we promote career opportunities at the companies that are going through, or have completed, our Apprenticeship program. We believe they have better managers and "more emotionally intelligent leaders" simply because they've been through a rigorous educational program designed to help them get better, while other companies haven't.

Learning how to hire well is the hardest thing about growing a company. What I mean by "well" is hiring the right person for the role the company needs to fill, and at the right time.

Hiring is the topic that arguably gets the most coverage during our Apprenticeship program. It comes up regularly in our Forum discussions, when founders share challenges and experiences with their peers. It's the actual topic of one our classes, and is addressed in at least six of the other 11 classes. Hiring gets discussed in at least one-third of the Mentor Team meetings, and is almost always a topic during the HR tutoring sessions.

A Company's Strategic Core: Vision, Mission, Values

I recently led a workshop for the JuntoCompanies on what I call the "strategic core": a firm's vision, mission, and values (VMV). I usually don't teach in our program nor deliver formal presentations so this was an exception.

It's because in the past year, we increasingly discovered that a number of the JuntoCompanies struggled with - or didn't have - one or more of the VMV. There were various symptoms, all of which can be improved by having the strategic core.
