Emotional Intelligence: What Entrepreneurs Can Learn from a College Student

The textbook definition of emotional intelligence is “the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.” From a college student's perspective, it was something I had heard of but hadn’t put any thought into. I had not realized how important it was to have until joining the Junto Team.

There was a time when it was believed that education determined success, so to become successful you went to college and got a degree and essentially you were accomplished. However, that is not always the case. It is not about the education you have, it is about what you make of your education and how you handle the situations and experiences that are brought upon you.

Based upon my own experience and those I know, I can say wholeheartedly that emotional intelligence is a very important part to college and an essential trait to have. College is meant to educate their students in and out of the classroom. The environment for a college student is crafted to develop emotional intelligence by pushing each student in ways they have never been pushed.

I believe emotional intelligence is something important to have in almost any stressful time you come across in your personal or professional endeavors. College is there to help you find the career that fits you best. Emotional intelligence is there to help you make sure you fit that career.

Unfortunately, there is not a class called Emotions 101. It is up to us, whether or not we are driven to see the world in different aspects. The world is filled with those of diverse personalities so it's only fair that you attempt to understand them all instead of being closed-minded.

Imagine you are dealing with a friend who is distressed about being separated from family or having anxiety about final exams. When you know how to calm them down and react appropriately it helps the friend feel better and also gives you a sense of achievement. Isn’t that what having emotional intelligence is about? The selfless ability to fix a situation or helping someone just because you can.
