The only certainty we have is that the uncertainty will continue. In my book, that’s a small win.

Over the past four months, we’ve been whipsawed emotionally, physically, professionally, mentally, socially, intellectually, domestically, and financially…all due to no fault of our own. And as we step into the second half of the year, we are more aware, perhaps a bit stronger, and hopefully more hopeful.

The beauty of knowing that uncertainty will continue is that we get the space for one of our truly unique human capacities to re-emerge: our willpower.

It’s the capacity we rely on when we want to get better. It’s the capacity we tap into to gain emotional balance and self-control. It’s the capacity we turn to when we want to effect change. It’s the capacity we use when we declare our New Year’s resolutions. It’s the capacity we employ when those resolutions become realities.

The first half of 2020 is over. Happy New Year.
