"The mentors paused and looked at each other, and one asked, “Have you thought about firing them?” Immediately there was an epiphanic look among them like, “We had never thought of that.”"
What are you working on right now?
Time discipline: I’m prioritizing the big pieces in the cookie jar and not getting distracted by shiny things.
What are 1-2 leadership virtues you've observed or learned in your career?
Coachability, humility, resourcefulness, and a sense of humor.
How would you describe your areas of expertise based on industry, market, and/or function?
I think that my early stage expertise is pattern matching skills. After many years of investing, I’ve developed a strength in noticing and developing patterns that lead companies to success. I’ve learned that the primary characteristic that is indicative of success is the personal characteristics of the entrepreneur, the founder, and their team, and that’s true regardless of industry.
Finish the following sentence: "In my experience, ______________."
The willingness to choose what you want and pay for it is everything.
What is something that's not on your LinkedIn profile that you wish was?
How many people I’ve helped over the years navigate through unfamiliar landscape.
What is your most memorable Junto moment?
This is really memorable, it’s hilarious. We were mentoring a team that was at their wits end with regard to their outsourced marketing consulting firm. They had tried everything to get them on the same page and nothing was working. The mentors paused and looked at each other, and one asked, “Have you thought about firing them?” Immediately there was an epiphanic look among them like, “We had never thought of that.” They fired them the next day.
What is your strength when it comes to emotional intelligence?
What have you learned about yourself mentoring with Junto?
That I talk too much.
What is one book, blog, or podcast you recommend widely?
If I don’t get an entrepreneur to remember anything that I tell them, I ask them to at least read How to Win Friends and Influence People. It reframes and decriminalizes a word that causes a fear and anxiety - networking.
What is your superpower?
Finding parking spots in downtown areas.
